EUROCIDE
Let's start off with the information provided in
your "Profiles" section, which gives a concise overview of the three
personalities involved in Eurocide...
To Borislav
Schultheiss: The essential aspects of the band are almost all done
by you, you share the same vocal department with your fellow member,
you are the main mixer/programmer of the tracks, and lastly you even
showcase a talent in directing and perhaps making videos. You have
surely outdone yourself!
First, kindly
expound more on your Quiet Isolation Studio and the services offered
by that very establishment.
Borislav: The Quiet
Isolation Studio is mainly a production center for electronic music
not only for Eurocide. The whole creation process is done here,
starting from composing the first beats and melodies up to the final
mix and mastering. High-End analog devices polish the sound, that
can't be done inside the computer. So the studio also offers
mastering jobs at a very high quality level.
There's
no doubt that you have such a flair for the arts, just how did you
get started with your graphic/multimedia inclinations? Do you
somehow get money off them, or are they merely hobbies of yours that
you attend to whenever you come up with some ideas?
Borislav: The whole spectrum of visual and audio
arts is the essential part in my life. It started very early in the
childhood. Every skill is self-educated over many years: drawing,
painting, music making, video cut, everything. Now, I earn my living
with multimedia productions.
Your band strikes me as
a sonic rebel representative of the oppressed, or those pitiful
victims of unrighteousness. Where did all your political awareness
root from?
Borislav: Just take a look at the news
and try to imagine what will be the next step in history. We
believe, that the whole development will lead to a complete crash of
the civilisation as we know it. If this is done by war or other
cathastrophes - nobody knows.
I was able to download
all the videos, very time consuming indeed, but well worth the wait.
I started with "Blood Over the Red Desert". What is the theme of
that video and where did you get the animation part, are they
original works by you?
Borislav: Our videos are the
background visuals for our live-shows. Each video is harmonized with
the mood and text of the song. So it was done with "Blood over the
red desert", too. It tells a story about a war on Mars in the next
century, fought by corporate groups. The animations were made by
Japanese animators.
Next is titled "Elysium". I
noticed the movie sampling from "The Prophecy", what is the message
of that video?
Borislav: Yes, the lyrics reflect
the main theme of this excellent movie. Bernd was inspired to draw
the story a little bit further. So it became the text to the song.
The next two, "Dark Matter" and "Infowar", I will
leave the describing task to you.
Borislav: "Dark
Matter" ist one of our first tracks, introducing Bernd's "Dark
Matter Universe". It is disturbing, dark art. "Infowar" has the
theme of information as war-waging deadly weapons
Here's to Bernd Mayer: The function you stated isn't
totally clear to me, so if you don't mind please elaborate on the
following line "producer of abnormal ideas, text writer, short
stories". Explain to us how your contributions are put into use for
Eurocide.
Bernd: I am writing most of the lyrics
for Eurocide. They are based on my dark fiction short stories the
"Dark Matter Cycle". Borislav is then writing a suitable soundtrack
for the stories.
Aside from the abovementioned, what
else do you do for the band? Do you play any instruments at
all?
Bernd: Although I do not play an instrument
very well, I analyse the songs in their creation process and give
advices and new ideas what can be changed.
As DJ
Nightfall, what kinds of sounds do you play? Is your time divided
between DJing and your needed attendance during band shows/practice?
Bernd: I play the whole spectrum of EBM, Industrial
and Gothic. There are no conflicts with the activities for Eurocide.
What is the story behind "Dark Matter Zyklus" and
what is its specific purpose?
Bernd: The "Dark
Matter Cycle" is a seqeuence of short stories based on a very dark
vision of the future. It contains elements of horror, cyberpunk,
scienc-fiction and a bit fantasy. The whole "Dark Matter" universe
is the environment where the stories take place.
And
to Andi Grundler: How did you hook up with the other members of
Eurocide? What happened to your death metal group,
"Medusa"?
Andi: After ten years of singing at
"Medusa" I felt more and more attracted by the Gohic & Electro
scene. So I wanted to start a new way which I found with Eurocide.
Medusa is still playing with another singer and we are still good
friends.
Are you the backing vocals of the band? Or
do you perform solo vocal pieces on some songs?
Andi: The vocals parts are split between Borislav and me. I
am responsible for the hard and aggressive vocals, Borislav more for
the melodic parts. We both have our songs. On stage you can see me
as the frontline singer.
Did you find it hard to
adjust to the change of musical approach? How did you manage to tame
your innate death metal preoccupations?
Andi: Tame?
There's no taming at all! The fire of the devil is still burning!
Borislav: Electro gives almost the same ways of aggression
but in another style.
You are also one of two DJs in
the band. As DJ D' Man, what types of genres do you spin?
Andi: Bernd and me complement one another when we
are performing together. Our styles of DJing are similar but not
identical.
Last question for you, what does
"textfleischwolf" stand for exactly?
Andi: It's the
german word for "lyrics meat grinder". I take the lyrics of Bernd,
split them up and put them together again for a better fitting into
the songs.
For the band:
How did it all begin? And why did you choose the
name "Eurocide"? It really intrigued me mainly because of the images
of Europe lying down in dust. Did you mean that wholly when you
declared it?
Borislav: We DO NOT exactly mean
Europe into dust! We are just the spectators that watch the signs go
by and write them down in songs. But nobody sees the dangerous
development that mankind is leading to. Europe will be the center of
the world cataclysms that will come in the near future.
Do all of you share the same motherland? I'm only
trying to put the pieces together here.
Bernd: Yes,
we are all german, born in the same city.
What then
is the general theme of the band?
Borislav: As said
before, we see ourselves as chronists who documentate the events
that lead to the Eurocide. If we will survive, we will try to keep
the things for the following generations in form of art.
Like I said a while ago, you have a penchant for
political issues, do they also become obvious in the lyrics section?
What is the very message that you wish to convey?
Bernd: We just want to put a tip onto the actions, the world
is leading to.
Borislav: Just want to say "Hello! Wake up
before it is too late." Don't believe that the life mankind is
living at the moment will be the same forever.
How
are things with the band presently? What new undertakings are you
focused on these days?
Andi: There will be a new
release in October 2005. Also a new tour is planned but no yet fixed
You inject harsh EBM and dual vocalizations into the
music's bloodstream. Do you plan to shy away from electro-industrial
in the near future? Are you eyeing new opportunities? Maybe give
death metal a shot?
Borislav: Although we are
mainly a electronic band we are not afraid of using other
instruments or vocalists to express our art. In the next release for
example we will introduce a female singer
Please
give us your discography and the latest material that you'd like to
promote.
Borislav: Maxi single "Europe in Dust",
Album "Europe in Dust" and several sampler contributions. The next
release will be a EP with 7 tracks called "Eden to Nod".
What are your favorite Eurocide songs? And what
significance do they have to you?
Andi: There is no
favourite song. We like each song the same because of the whole
concept where a single song was put into.
Have you
worked with other artists in your history? Or have done remix and
cover songs? Who would you like to perform with?
Borislav: We have done a remix for "Das Ich" with the song
"Der Schrei". Bruno Kramm was very happy about our version. Other
remixes will be done in the future for other acts.
How was your Wave Gotik Treffen experience? Do you
always find time for that prestigious event?
Bernd:
The WGT was a very fine experience. Whenever we find the time, we
visit this event. It is inspiring to see so many people sharing the
same thoughts.
What is your final message? Thank you
very much and good luck!
Eurocide (together
shouting): Today the world - Tomorrow the solar system
